Orthodontic Retainers
The long-term success of your orthodontic treatment depends on wearing your retainers as instructed. Here’s what you need to know about your responsibilities when it comes to retainers:
Removable Retainers
Once your braces are removed, you’ll receive removable retainers to help stabilize your teeth. It’s crucial to wear them as directed, especially in the months following the removal of braces when the bone and soft tissues are still stabilizing. Failing to wear your retainers can result in your teeth shifting back to their original positions, which may require additional treatment.
How to Wear Your Retainers
Teeth naturally continue to shift throughout life, so we recommend wearing your retainers indefinitely. For the first year after braces are removed, wear your retainers full-time. After that, you can transition to wearing them just at night.
This approach allows for the development of your wisdom teeth without affecting your smile. Dr. Muhammed Kaka will check your progress every six to nine months and may recommend an X-ray to assess your wisdom teeth. Once a decision is made regarding your wisdom teeth, you should wear your retainers at least two nights a week to prevent teeth from shifting, as the muscles around your teeth tighten with age and can cause movement or crowding.
Caring for Your Retainers
Retainers are made from thermoplastic material that can be damaged by high temperatures, so avoid placing them near heaters, dishwashers, or car dashboards. When not in use, always store your retainers in their designated case, and keep them away from pets who might chew on them.
To maintain cleanliness, rinse and brush your retainers gently before and after wearing them. A mild soap and toothbrush can help remove plaque, and occasional cleaning with a denture solution like Sterident will help eliminate tartar buildup. Always rinse your retainers thoroughly after cleaning.
Retainers may need to be replaced periodically due to wear. If they become lost or damaged, there will be a charge for replacement. Should your retainers become loose or break, contact our office immediately.
Fixed Retainers (Bonded Wire)
Fixed retainers are a permanent solution, and your orthodontist will recommend how long they should stay in place. The only reason to remove the wire is if your family dentist notices that it is causing gum or bone issues due to improper cleaning. If this happens, the fixed wire can be replaced with a removable retainer, which should be worn as prescribed by Dr. Kaka.
The fixed wire provides ongoing protection, particularly as facial muscles tighten with age, and it should be monitored at your regular six-month dental check-ups.
Habits or Conditions Requiring Stronger Retention
Certain habits or conditions may require extra retentive measures to maintain your smile, including:
• Mouth breathing
• Clenching or grinding of teeth
• Tongue thrusting or abnormal tongue posture
• Playing reed musical instruments
• Lip sucking
• Pen or pencil biting
• Pre-existing gaps or rotated teeth
Regular Dental Check-ups and Cleanings
Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential during retainer wear. Be sure to brush and floss thoroughly, and continue to visit your family dentist every six months for professional cleanings and exams.
By following these guidelines, you can help ensure your smile stays beautiful and healthy for a lifetime. Your cooperation is key to achieving this goal.
